With hard ground, baking hot sun, and scarce food and water, the situation is likely to worsen. It will take months of steady rain to replenish water systems, and the recovery of wildlife will be a long and challenging process.
The RSPCA has seen a significant increase in the number of heat-distressed herring gull chicks being brought into its sanctuaries. In June and July 2025, 380 chicks were accepted, but this year, the number has risen to 1,297. Staff have been working tirelessly to keep the chicks hydrated and cool, and when they are ready, they are released into the wild. The organization has also reported a 30% increase in the number of dehydrated and orphaned hedgehogs being cared for.
